STRONGER THAN MY STORM BY CITIZEN SOLDIER

Avalon

“I don’t know how to do this, Dustin.”

He laughs a little, dropping the cushioned boxing pads to the floor and grabbing the tapes from me. “Putting these on is half the battle. Once that’s done, you’ll be ready to go.”

“Really? Because the way I’m looking at it, if I can’t even put the tapes on right without your help, I’m not going to be able to throw a decent punch to save my life.”

“We’re not aiming for life saving today,” he promises, switching to wrap my other hand in the black cloth. “We’re aiming for anger release.”

I push my lips into a pout. “Anger doesn’t last very well when you fail at the simplest part of the job before you’ve even started the workout. Also, I’m going to look stupid.”

“You didn’t fail; you’ve just never done this before. And as for looking stupid,” Dustin spins me in his hold so that I’m facing the mirrors covering the entire back wall of the gym cabin, resting his chin on my shoulder, “it’s not possible. Especially when you look so damn sexy like this.”

Heat flushes to my cheeks as I meet his gaze in our reflection. “Now I’m definitely not angry.”

I’m also not sure whether this is going to work the way Dustin thinks it will. His theory is that boxing with him will help me deal with everything I’ve been feeling since the literal news broke last week of him being the one to kill Hayden. Which surprisingly is still primarily annoyance, anger and hatred just like it was when my mind decided it was a great idea for me to slam my fist into a wall.

He insisted we wait at least a week until the scrapes and scabs I left myself with that night weren’t so fresh so that they wouldn’t open up again, and he hadn’t been in a very good headspace until now. But that week is finished, and Dustin said he’s having a better day today, so here we are, me in leggings, a couple of layered bralettes because I don’t have any sports bras—something Dustin’s now determined to deal with due to his certainty that I’m going to love working out with him like this—and a fitted tank top, and Dustin in shorts and a t-shirt ready to coach me into the next fighter extraordinaire.

But I’m not so sure—about the loving it part, anyway. For one, I haven’t exercised since high school gym class, and I was never very good at it back then. Mostly because I don’t like sports all that much and therefore couldn’t really be bothered with putting in the effort to learn them. And because of reason one, I don’t have much strength to play with here, and I’m pretty sure that’s kind of crucial when you’re purposefully trying to hit something or someone with a lot of intensity, which is the entire concept of boxing.

Everyone has to start somewhere though, right? It’s not like Dustin expects me to be exceptionally amazing and pick it all up within the next hour or anything.
